Jim Fred is a Hopi Indian of the Greasewood/Roadrunner Clans. He was born in 1945 and has been an active carver of Katsina dolls since 1961. He lives on the Hopi Reservation in the Third Mesa Village of Bacavi. He is a brother of other Hopi Katsina doll carvers, Henry Fred, Malcolm Fred, Verlan Fred, Nathan Fred and Glenn Fred. The Hopi name is EWIRO. Ewiro is an old style Third Mesa Katsina that normally appears during Pachavu. However, he may appear to make war on the clowns during the regular plaza dances later in the year. He functions as a policeman and formerly oversaw the cleaning out of springs. He carries a small shield on his right hip or waist. The black and white roll around his neck is called a ruff. The IUCN WCPA Fred M. Packard Award is an international merit award which is made by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to individuals or groups in recognition of "outstanding service to protected and conserved areas" across the globe. The award is named for the individual who served as the Secretary to the World Commission on Protected Areas in the early 1970s. Packard initially established the award in recognition of the valour of field wardens fighting and at times losing their lives to poachers in the course of conservation work, mostly in the developing world. At the third World National Parks Congress in Bali, 1982 the award was expanded to include people and organizations who have "contributed to protected areas far above and beyond the call of duty".
